We have talked to a large number of Headteachers and Classroom teachers about Lofts; in turn
they have told us excitedly about the potential of Lofts to contribute positively to implementing the curriculum and particularly with reference to the Early Years Foundation Stage. EYFS relates to children from birth to five; we see this as being the perfect time for children to enjoy learning with a Classroom Loft. Lofts in the terminology of EYFS can be viewed as ‘Enabling Environments’, a place children find challenging and interesting and fun, a place which supports your work and encourages attention, participation and learning.
A Classroom Loft can be a focal point for themed class work; perhaps an Easter project, or How Plants Grow or Space. The Loft can assume the identity of the project, the children can dress it up with paintings and displays and it can be used for small groups to learn about numbers, letters, play and contemplation.
Teachers tell us that Lofts encourage learning because children find them exciting and stimulating. This is a constructive frame of mind to facilitate productive teaching.
